Storyline: Chris Faraday once smuggled illegal items or contraband into the country on freighters. He left that life behind, got married, has a family and went legit. But when his brother-in-law got involved with Briggs, a drug dealer and when he blew a deal, Briggs demands restitution which he can't deliver. So Chris offers to find a way to pay Briggs but then he threatens Chris' family if he doesn't deliver. So he gets on a freighter destined for Panama and he sets out to bring back some counterfeit currency. Briggs "goes to see" Chris' family. When Chris learns of this he asks his friend Sebastian to take care of them which he does. He tells Chris that it would be better to bring drugs instead of the cash.

Contraband thankfully is more entertaining than your usual run-of-the-mill January action thriller. I think we may have to thank the cast for that because they were really good in this somewhat generic movie. Honestly, I haven't seen many big names in a January release so this was a surprise. But this film is fun, better than expected, and doesn't really relent on the action.

This film is about a retired smuggler who is forced back into his old trade when he has to protect his brother-in-law because he failed to complete a job.

Mark Wahlberg is a consistent action hero and while some people may not like him, he has a certain charisma that I have come to like. Kate Beckinsale is aging gracefully and it looks like she gas grown more beautiful as she gets older. Giovanni Ribisi makes a convincing bad guy despite being annoying at times.

Overall, this is an above-average thriller thanks to the leads. This may be generic but I like these kind of films and they never grow old for me, even when I can predict what happens next such as I did here. But with lots of action scenes and great acting, this should please movie fans. I rate this film 8/10.
Contraband is an action thriller, a former smuggler has to back into business for his brother in law to save him and his family from drug lord. Movie is more a heist and with average script it brings some sorts of excitement. It is not kind your edge of your seat thriller which easily called masterpiece rather than it is entertaining piece. For moviegoers go to cinema with buckets of popcorn and to enjoy those minute. It is well directed movie and easily can be enjoyed in Home videos too. Mark is easily a star he knows What is film about? and it is for whom. It is not meant to win critics heart or win multiple awards its for enjoyment and it is not disappointing.
Ended up liking it much more than I thought at first...
It started out a bit too reminiscent of "Gone in 60 Seconds" for me and I thought I would lose interest. I didn't. It ended up much more exciting than expected and I really enjoyed all the action - even as a female that likes action movies for the most part, but gets bored with the "same old crap".

Giovanni Ribisi is hard to believe at first as "THE tough guy/Bad Ass", but fits the role perfectly as twists come to light. Perhaps his place as a protagonist where there is a young guy in deep trouble that needs rescuing from his brother (in-law, in this case) is what put me so in mind of "Gone in 60 Seconds" at the beginning of this movie.

Lots of twists... some expected, but I'm one of those people that figures it all out pretty easily (and ticks off those watching with me - if I say it out loud), but a couple that were unexpected, too.

Watch - Enjoy - it's worth it!
I Contra - banned this movie from my house
This movie wasn't half as good as a Tuesday special full roast chicken from Metro for $6.99. The movies starts off really promising with Marky Mark lifting weights, installing security systems and driving his truck over sidewalks. According to the special features Mark had to sit on four phone books to reach the pedals. Speaking of Special Features the only Special Feature Marky Mark has is that his brother Donnie has been carrying him for years! Anyways, I digress.

Contraband is a movie about a group of smug smugglers who try to smuggle something somewhere, or something. I don't really know to be honest. Giovanni Ribisi is trying to channel Marlon Brando, but unfortunately for him he just sounds like somebody beat his mouth in with a Louisville slugger. They got Ben Foster to be in the movie by lying to him and telling him that this wasn't a Marky Mark film. Then on the last day of shooting surprise! You've been Marked! That's what he calls it when he tricks people to be in his movies, which obviously he has to do. Quick, whats a good Marky Mark movie? You probably said Notting Hill….but guess what?!?! Marky Mark isn't in Notting Hill, you just got Marked!

All in all I would give Contraband one VHS tape out of ten. If Marky Mark wants to keep his career going he is going to need to do a buddy cop movie with brother Donnie very soon and call it Baston Brothers.
Enjoyable heist
I really enjoyed this film. Altho some characters are expected, there are some new characters who I found interesting. Enough unexpected turns to keep me interested. And the plot is easy to follow, not some fantastic indecipherable thriller you can never figure out. A lot of the movie is shot in shipping yards of New Orleans and Panama including the locks. Also credits were given to Iceland and not sure what that was. Liked Mark Wahlberg, and David O'Hara (and his Scottish accent) was a surprise. Not enough car chases for other reviewers? Not enough sex, werewolves, vampires, or torture, drug use or sci-fi story lines? Too bad. A great and clever heist with some nice twists. Very enjoyable.
A decent but typical Drug Heist
A thriller cum heist movie with some of the ingenuity of Oceans Eleven but minus the flair, 'Contraband' combines a respectably engaging plot with otherwise generally bland characters. This is, apart from J.K Simmons who expertly combined a brand of gruffness, humour and cynicism in a very Simminsesque role, not too unlike his J. Jonah Jameson persona from the 'Spider Man' films. The real drawback of the film was the failure to delve deeper within Ben Foster's already complex and disturbed character, Sebastian, who could have potentially driven the film. It wasn't a compelling, new spin on a drug heist but neither did it fail miserably.
Pretty strong drug-smuggling thriller
CONTRABAND is a tale of cross-border drug-smuggling, centred around a tough, everyman character played by the underrated Mark Wahlberg. The film for the most part sidesteps modern-day Hollywood clichés, like shoehorned-in action scenes that add nothing to the storyline and are merely there to give choreographers and special effects guys a chance to earn their keep. For the record, there's only one (relevant) car chase.

Instead this is a taut, suspenseful story that plays realistic for the most part, and all the better for it. The truth is that it doesn't bring anything new to the table and the thrills it chronicles are very familiar, but its depiction of the minutiae of the scenario keep it moving merrily along. It also has some suitably unpleasant bad guys to boo at.

CONTRABAND also features a cast of former youthful stars who are nowadays moving into more mature roles. Ben Foster and Giovanni Ribisi play to type, but it's good to see Lukas Haas given some proper material and even Kate Beckinsale isn't too shabby. J. K. Simmons stands out in a supporting role as the ship's captain and Diego Luna once again delivers an edgy turn. The film might be no classic but for solid thrills and suspense you could do a lot worse.
another well planned heist film
This movie was OK, but nothing new. The one thing I can't stand about these type of movies, and it is very evident here, is how the criminal comes close to getting caught so many times, but always has a genies plan to get away with the crime.

Here, Chris, is an ex smuggler whom must get back in the game to save his brother-in-law from a gangster that he owes drugs. So Chris and some former pals go to Panama on a ship and plan to smuggle counterfeit bills. Meanwhile, he leaves friend, Sebastian, to look out for his wife and kids. But, it doesn't take long to see Sebastian is in over his head.

In Panama, the plan goes off the grid, but some how they always find a way. And at the end, we find out a tarp will make all their dreams come true.

FINAL VERDICT: Entertaining, just not a new idea. If you like heist films, check this out.
An Entertaining Good Movie-Not great but good-
It is enjoyable to watch Mark Wahlberg on the screen, especially when he is in his element and that is playing a family member trying to protect his family. Like Bobby Mercer in FOUR BROTHERS or Joseph Grusinsky in WE OWN THE NIGHT, here in this film we have Chris Farraday trying to set his brother-in-law right for the betterment of the family. Wahlberg is like Matt Damon's Jason Bourne, different context but he makes you feel safe. Whatever the outcome we know Chris Farraday will prevail for the good of all in the end. As a painter, I enjoyed the tongue- in cheek play on the Pollack painting, how everyone saw it as a tarp, however its never explained if Farraday recognized its significance. It would be nice if he had- just another element of his astuteness. yes there were far too many contrived scenes in order to make the movie work, and its plot originality was poor but this time I didn't care- the film was that enjoyable. Although I have my reservations for younger brother Robert Wahlberg acting skills but who knows. We can only see. While this wasn't a great film it was a fun film. I by no means felt any tension or was on the edge of my seat but I was entertained. Wahlberg has acted in far better films. I only hope he ups the ante on his next films. We've already seen far too many great actors such as DeNiro, Liotta & Cage take the fork in the road towards quantity and not quality.
Contraband - A Movie Viewer's Review
Contraband is a pretty good movie. That being said, there are some mistakes in this movie that could have made it a great movie. Through the last half of the movie it just makes all of the scenes and all of the drama into a jumbled up mess. Going into this movie, you will have to know that this is a thriller, and only then will you be truly entertained while watching this.

The story is a strong one with multiple arguments jam packed together into one big dramatic fight. What happens, though, is that there gets to be too many big arguments and they overlap each other and eventually you'll forget one part that happened that was very important and then you'll be watching a next important argument.

There is a violent shootout. It's about five minutes long, but for an R rated movie it's nothing compared to some of the violence in other movies.

I think that the worst problem that was done in this movie was that people expected the wife to be kidnapped and then at the end Chris would have killed the bad guy. No. What happens is that Tim Riggs keeps threatening Chris' family, once to Chris and the rest of the times to his wife, and what really happens is that near the beginning and near the end Chris keeps showing up Tim.

I liked this movie for a thriller but if you're more of an action movie lover, aka die hard, then don't waste your time with this movie because you will end up disappointed.

The last and most important thing I will state is that people who love strong stories will love the drama in this movie. It's all about transporting counterfeit bills from New Orleans to Panama and along the way there are many complications between Chris, Tim, Kate, and Sebastian. Get ready for a wild ride.
